Globally, there are an estimated 37.9 million people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and 35 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses since the start of the epidemic. Despite scientific advances, HIV/AIDS has not gone away—and there is still a strong need to raise awareness and funding to support those facing the disease. World AIDS Day offers an opportunity to show solidarity with the millions of people living with HIV around the world and to honor those who have lost their fight.
In this article, we share information on World AIDS Day: what it is, why it’s important, and how Avella and BriovaRx supports people who are fighting HIV/AIDS.
What Is World AIDS Day?
Since 1988, World AIDS Day has been observed on December 1st of each year. World AIDS Day—the first-ever global health day—is a chance for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS and to honor those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses. This day of support is important because it helps raise global awareness and money to support research and improve HIV/AIDS education. Many people elect to wear a red ribbon on World AIDS Day to show their solidarity.
How Does Avella Support People Living with HIV or AIDS?
Avella and BriovaRx are dedicated to meeting the unique needs of the individuals living with HIV. As such, there are several programs and resources available to provide support to HIV/AIDS patients who are prescribed specialty medications.
HIV/AIDS Specialty Medications
Treatment for HIV/AIDS often consists of a variety of different specialty medications. Avella stocks all of the most advanced HIV/AIDS medications, including antiviral and antiretroviral drugs.
AIDS Drug Assistance Program
Avella is a proud pharmacy network provider of the Arizona AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). The program provides low-income HIV/AIDS patients with access to specialty medications used to treat the disease and prevent related infections. Avella was founded in Arizona, and has a reputation for helping low-income patients find the help they need. Avella and BriovaRx have recently partnered with FundFinder to bring this same financial assistance to patients across the US.
Text Message Program
Avella’s text messaging program is an interactive way to help patients stay on track and adhere to their prescribed treatment plan. HIV/AIDS patients can sign up for the program to receive text/SMS alerts when it’s time to take their medications or when it’s time to refill a prescription.
Financial Assistance Program
HIV/AIDS medications are often costly—but that shouldn’t keep patients from accessing the drugs they need. Avella and BriovaRx work directly with specialty drug manufacturers and nonprofit organizations to see if patients qualify for financial assistance and to help them apply if they do.
Prior Authorization Support
Insurance companies monitor specialty prescriptions very closely and, in some cases, even deny patients coverage or require them to jump through hoops to access their medications. Avella’s team members have extensive experience securing prior authorizations for specialty drugs, and they work closely with insurance companies to ensure patients have swift access to their prescribed medications.
24/7 Patient Support
Because HIV/AIDS patients are on a wide range of medications, drug interactions and side effects are a real concern. That’s why our compassionate pharmacists at are always available to provide clinical support to HIV/AIDS patients on dosing, side effects, interactions, and more. Support is available to patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The fight against HIV/AIDS is ongoing—and the fight will only continue to thrive with the appropriate amount of support and public awareness.
