Did you know that many HIV patients refuse to go to the hospital or receive medical treatment over fear of stigmatization and discrimination? Most people know that the virus is spread through sexual transmission, but falsely believe that you can catch it through social contact. The truth is, when a patient adheres to the necessary medication and the viral load has reached an undetectable level (not measurable in the bloodstream), that person cannot transmit HIV to a partner who is HIV negative. To help combat this ever-present stigma, Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) was launched in 2016 with the leadership of individuals living with HIV. Since then, the project has united a worldwide community of HIV advocates, activists, researchers, and community partners. Its mission is to educate and share the facts of the disease to improve lives and reduce misinformation about HIV and HIV Transmission.

The Undetectable = Untransmittable initiative is an unprecedented opportunity to transform the lives of people with HIV. The organization actively works to spread awareness based on science, not stigma. The goal is to empower people with HIV with accurate information about their social, sexual, and reproductive health. By increasing awareness and presenting the facts, the initiative hopes to dismantle HIV transmission stigma in community, clinical, and personal settings. Through its work, U=U also promotes adherence to treatment plans, which can help many reach an undetectable stage of their disease and ultimately save lives.

In 2019, Avella + BriovaRx Specialty Pharmacies joined the growing global movement of over 870 organizations pledging to share the U=U mission by becoming a community partner. There has never been a more hopeful time in the history of HIV/AIDS; every day is another step closer to finding a cure to this disease. This partnership is just another way Avella and BriovaRX are working to improve patient lives by supporting patient communities and advocacy and offering resources for education. We invite you to learn more about U=U’s work here.
