Demystifying the Complexity of a Specialty Pharmacy Prescription

Written by Avella Specialty Pharmacy | Thu, Jun 26, 2014

What is the difference between a specialty prescription and a traditional prescription?  We often get that question from our patients.  Understanding this process is especially important since consumers and physicians are interacting with specialty pharmacies more than ever before. In fact, over half of new drugs approved by the FDA in 2013 were specialty medications. By 2016, it is estimated that 8 out of the top 10 pharmaceutical products will be specialty drugs.

To help educate our patients, we created an engaging video last year designed to help individuals understand the role of specialty pharmacies and the value organizations like Avella provide.  The video, “What is a Specialty Pharmacy?,” was viewed more than 13,000 times.

To continue to educate individuals on the specialty prescription, we have created a new educational video that helps all of our audiences—including patients, providers and business partners—understand the complexities of specialty prescriptions.  Titled “The Path of a Specialty Pharmacy Prescription,” this video explains all of the additional steps involved in processing a prescription for a specialty medication as opposed to a traditional prescription.

What will you learn from the video?

  • With the specialty pharmacy industry experiencing significant growth, it is critical to further understand the complex world of specialty drugs.
  • The path of a specialty prescription and extra steps necessary to most effectively process  specialty prescriptions.
  • Take a behind-the-scenes look at the valuable services and support that Avella offers as part of our relentless devotion to clinical excellence.

This new video is designed to help patients, providers and business partners understand the critical role that specialty pharmacies play “behind the scenes” as part of a patient’s overall healthcare team. This role involves close coordination with the prescribing physician, working with insurance companies to verify benefits and secure authorizations, and providing patient education and support.
