4 Ways to Show Your Support for Blood Cancer Awareness Month

Written by Avella Specialty Pharmacy | Sat, Sep 13, 2014

Every September, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society observes Blood Cancer Awareness Month.  LLS does this as a unique way to raise awareness about blood cancers and the work LLS is doing to advance research to find cures and provide access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

Did you know that since 1949, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, with the help of communities and individuals like yourself, has invested almost $1 billion in research to advance therapies and save lives of patients with blood cancers.  LLS has bseen dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. They are the world's largest voluntary (nonprofit) health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services.

How can you help LLS both during and after Blood Cancer Awareness Month?

Volunteer:  Anyone can be an LLS volunteer.  There are a variety of opportunities available to help you make the most of your volunteering experience.  LLS provides flexible schedules with a variety of commitment and responsibility levels to help match your volunteer goals.  They match you to your capabilities and interests, and to even help you learn new skills.  In addition, LLS provides opportunities to join their internship program as a way to volunteer while gaining professional experience.

Participate in Events:  LLS has many ways to host and/or get involved with a charitable fundraising event to benefit their organization. Whether you're looking for a physical challenge such as a walk or run, or an evening event to raise awareness and funds, there are events tailored to almost anyone. Find your local chapter to see the events happening in your area.

Corporate Partnership:  Corporate partnerships are crucial to the LLS.  Partnering with them helps corporations achieve their charitable giving goals, boost employee engagement, and satisfy business objectives that tie into giving and volunteering.  A few ways to get involved as a corporation is to sponsor an event, develop cause-related marketing programs that tie into your business objectives, or to even fund a patient-focused program.

Become an Advocate:  Advocacy for LLS is critical.  Did you know that LLS advocates raised their voices in 2013 and made great victories possible for the organization?  Because of advocates, LLS was able to focus on a renewed plan to work toward a cure and improve the lives of blood cancer patients in 2014.  Advocates help to accelerate cures and save lives through their work from city halls to state capitols.

As you can see, there are many ways to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during September and throughout the year.  View their website to learn more about their organization, and see how you can raise awareness and help support their initiatives.  We also invite you to learn more about additional oncology treatment resources available to you or your patients as they go through their oncology treatment plan.
